First debuted at the Fall/Winter 2018 show during Milan Fashion Week in February, the Gucci SEGA Flashtrek sneakers were released five months later in July. Chunky, clunky and inspired by the iconic video game maker, Sega - the immediately recognisable sneaker is a loud style statement. Featuring retro panelling and chunky rubber soles, each pair also features a Gucci logo written in the classic bold SEGA font.
Gucci first released the Flashtrek sneaker in three colorways, before updating the style with removable, crystal-studded straps. Inspired by performance mountain boot design, these boots are made for the ‘urban hiker.’ They’re a playful, high energy take on this summer’s powerful ‘Gorpcore’ trend, the phrase being coined from the acronym ‘gorp’, which stands for “granola, oats, raisins, peanuts”, or trail mix.
This is one of a series of cult shoe designs by Gucci, under the creative helm of Alessandro Michele. Having previously worked for Karl Lagerfeld and Silvia Venturini Fendi at Fendi, Michele started at Gucci under Tom Ford who first hired him to design bags for the brand in 2002. His instantly recognisable, multi-hued maximalist aesthetic has attracted a huge and loyal global fanbase for the brand.
Championing the idea of personal style and individuality, the Gucci brand under Michele is both eclectic and romantic, which is evident in the Flashtrek’s offbeat color combinations. Unexpected shades of camo-green are mixed with neon oranges, pearlescent purples and golds.
Both Kylie Jenner and Hailey Baldwin have been seen in Gucci’s Flashtrek sneakers, worn with Juicy couture-inspired tracksuits and Levi’s denim. The sneakers can be purchased from Gucci’s online store and retailers as well as MatchesFashion and Selfridges.
