After a promising month-long World Cup in Russia, football, as it turned out, wasn’t coming home for England. However by making it to the final week of the World Cup, the young squad managed to get a frustrated nation to love football again, and as England went soccer crazy so did demand for the team’s new Nike football strip, the most searched for team kit of the tournament.
Only in a world cup year could a football shirt make it into a list of the world’s hottest fashion products, and this year there was huge amounts of press coverage and social media buzz surrounding the competing team’s kits. Nigeria’s green, white and black shirt paid homage to their 1994 shirt, with an eagle wing-inspired black-and-white sleeve and green torso. Fans and fashion commentators alike celebrated its design, and the shirts promptly sold out worldwide, as did Croatia’s red and white chessboard design. But over the course of the tournament the England shirt was the most searched-for out of all the competing countries, with eager fans desperate to pick up a piece of team kit as the team progressed further through the tournament.
The slimline Nike shirt features the Saint George's cross on the neck, a rosette located on the inside of the collar, and red, white and blue colours, as historically seen on England kits. A solitary star sits above the England crest in reference to the team’s 1966 World Cup win. Like all of Nike’s designs, the shirt lives up to the demands of tough workouts, with the brand describing it as having "optimal breathability" and features "Dri-FIT Technology”.
While footballers and fashion might not seem like the easiest bedfellows, iconic sports strips, including football jerseys have provided plenty of catwalk inspiration for designers in recent months. Gosha Rubchinskiy, Kim Jones and Virgil Abloh have all expressed love for the beautiful game, and Acne Studios released a football capsule collection this Summer. With the impending Women’s World Cup next year, we predict you’ll continue to see more football-related fashion in your feed.
